The 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans shine a light on the role of delicious, nutritious dairy in healthful eating patterns
- More than 80% of Americans don’t get enough dairy in their diets.
- How much is enough? Recommendations are 2 cups (or the equivalent in yogurt or cheese) for children ages 2 to 3 years, 2½ cups for children ages 4 to 8 years, and 3 cups for teens ages 9 to 18 years and for adults.
- Fat-free and low-fat dairy are advised.
- Dairy group foods have 3 of the 4 “nutrients of concern”: calcium, vitamin D, and potassium (the 4th is fiber). Although other nutrients are under-consumed by Americans, these stand out because their low intakes are linked to health problems.
- Recommended eating patterns all include the dairy group: USDA-Style, Mediterranean-Style, and Vegetarian.
- Added sugars are now limited to 10% of calories. The Dietary Guidelines say that sweetened milk and yogurt may be included.
